Coastguard Dunedin assist solo sailor in 2024–25 Vendée Globe yacht race
Otago, 10 February 2024 - This afternoon Coastguard Dunedin came to the aid of a French 30m Actual Ultim trimaran part of the 2024–25 Vendée Globe - a solo non-stop yacht race around the world. The yacht had sustained damage and needed repairs. Volunteers aboard Moana Rescue took French technicians out to assist the solo sailor with repairs so he could continue in the race.
The race rules meant Coastguard weren't allowed to interfere, so they guided the yacht into the harbour through the Otago Heads to the upper harbour basin. Harbour Control provided support to Coastguard Dunedin with broadcasting on VHF to guide the yacht in safely under motor.
This rare opportunity to help in an international yacht race came after Moana Rescue acted as the safety vessel at St Clair Beach for the RNZAF Black Falcons, the Royal New Zealand Air Force Aerobatic Team.
