Coastguard prepares for mixed weather this Easter weekend

New Zealand, 28 March 2024 – With Easter weekend on the horizon, Coastguard is gearing up for a mixed bag of weather conditions across the motu. According to forecasts, the North Island will see wind and rain, while the South Island can look forward to clear skies and sunshine. Whatever your plans, Coastguard will be side-by-side with you on the water if you need help.

The magic summer weather made for one of our busiest seasons on record, with volunteers responding to 1,251 incidents, rescuing 48 people and helping more than 3,300 home safely. Despite the cooler weather, volunteers remain busy, as highlighted by a rescue at Raglan this week, where three boaties were saved from the water following a capsize.

For many keen water-users, Easter represents the last opportunity for a long weekend of fishing, kayaking and family outings on the water. To avoid your long weekend being cut short, Coastguard recommends giving your boat a once-over before getting to the ramp.

“Your safety is our priority. If in doubt, don't go out," says a Coastguard spokesperson. "Ensure everyone on board is wearing a correctly fitting lifejacket, carry two forms of waterproof communication, and check local marine weather conditions before departure. It's also important to log your trip with us so we know where you're going and when you plan to be back."

You can easily log a trip via the free Coastguard app, and access live weather updates. The app features five-day forecasts for wind, weather, swell and tides as well as saving your favourite spots for quick access next time. Download it here.

For on-water assistance this Easter, water-users can call *500 free from their mobile phone or use your local Coastguard VHF channel. For marine emergencies please call 111 or VHF Channel 16.
