Coastguard volunteers

Good people have been volunteering their time to save New Zealanders since ships started arriving on our shores.

Nationally, 1,988 Coastguard volunteers save 6,774 lives on our seas, lakes and rivers each year. Our volunteers are supported by four regional teams based in Christchurch, Wanganui, Tauranga and Auckland, and a national office located in Auckland.

Volunteering

Coastguard volunteers give over 290,000 hours of their free time every year to make sure you can enjoy our magnificent waterways, secure in the knowledge that should anything go wrong, Coastguard will be there to help.

Discover what it means to be a Coastguard volunteer - the sense of reward and camaraderie, the mental and physical challenges and the priceless opportunity to save lives on the water.
