Coastguard Tautiaki Moana is Aotearoa New Zealand’s primary maritime search and rescue organisation, powered by over 2000 volunteers, and enabled by staff.
Our vision is to help everyone get the best out of their time on the water, safely and with confidence.
Last year our volunteers gave their time to help bring thousands of people home safely, from Houhora to Bluff, across oceans, major rivers, and lakes.
Our volunteers are based at 62 Coastguard units and communities around the country:
- 60 units crewing 101 rescue vessels and rescue craft (jet ski)
- 2 air patrol units based in Auckland and Northland
- A dedicated National Operations Centre in Auckland where highly trained volunteers and staff lead search and rescue incidents and routine breakdowns as well as take trip reports.
We work closely with Police, the Rescue Co-ordination Centre (RCCNZ) and other search and rescue partners to coordinate major marine rescues and keep people safe on the water.
Beyond rescue, we're dedicated to prevention through boating education, water safety advocacy, community engagement and awareness campaigns. As Aotearoa New Zealand's leading provider of boating education, we offer courses and qualifications to suit all abilities.
