Riverton, 22 August 2025 - Last weekend, we were proud to stand alongside Coastguard Riverton volunteers, their families, supporters, local MP Hon Penny Simmonds, regional leaders, and the wider Southland community to celebrate two huge milestones - the launch of their brand-new rescue vessel, Russell John Chisholm, and the opening of the Fiordland Lobster Company Marine Rescue Centre.
The vessel continues to carry the name Russell John Chisholm, honouring the 7-year-old boy tragically lost in a plane crash in Foveaux Strait on 19 August 1998. That day, Coastguard Riverton volunteers rescued five survivors, while four lives were lost, and Russell was sadly never found.
For 26 years, the Chisholm family and Coastguard Riverton have shared a special bond. The family and their friends generously funded the original rescue vessel in 1999 and have remained incredible supporters ever since.
Russell’s father, John Chisholm, shared these words with The Press:
“It’s special. It’s been a very special day and it’s magical for us to see Russell’s name still on the boat.
It means a lot to us. It’s another 25 years of service. It’s been a very good day and turnout. There’s been lots of great work done from a lot of people. It’s been a great honour and we’re very privileged to be part of this service and see his name carry on.”
The new $1.6 million vessel is a NAiAD 10m Watchtower - the first of its kind in New Zealand to feature a wider hull and knuckle bow. Powered by twin V6 350hp Yamaha outboards, it can reach speeds of up to 50 knots and is equipped with state-of-the-art Raymarine electronics, purpose-built to take on the toughest callouts. Key features include autopilot search patterns, a FLIR thermal imaging camera, and night-vision capability, enabling volunteers to respond in all conditions.
At 1.5m longer than its predecessor, the vessel is faster, safer, and more comfortable for volunteers, with a hard top and heater - essentials on the chilly waters of Foveaux Strait.
This project has been years in the making. To every Coastguard Riverton volunteer, Coastguard staff member, funder, supporter, and local business who made this possible - thank you. And to the Chisholm family, volunteers past and present, and the Riverton community - your strength, support, and spirit made this moment possible.
