Behind every rescue today sits a growing web of technology that helps crews find people faster, reach them more safely, and coordinate rescue teams more effectively than ever before. From jet skis to AI, innovation is reshaping what it means to respond to an emergency at sea.
Speed and agility
In shallow water, surf zones, and tight inshore channels, traditional lifeboats can struggle to operate safely. This is where jet skis have become a genuine game-changer. Lightweight, fast, and manoeuvrable, rescue watercraft can get to a casualty in conditions that would be far riskier for a larger vessel, and can be launched quickly from beaches where there's no harbour nearby. For swimmers in difficulty close to shore, that speed and flexibility often makes the difference between a close call and a tragedy.
Eyes where rescuers can't go
Unmanned aerial vehicles have quietly become one of the most valuable tools in the modern rescue kit. Drones can scan cliffs, caves, and stretches of coastline that are too dangerous or too time-consuming for a search team to cover on foot. That means real-time data sharing, live video, and clearer coordination between shore teams, vessels, and control centres - even miles from the nearest mast.
Digital data management and operational efficiency
Away from the drama of an active rescue, technology is also quietly transforming how operations are planned and run. Digital data management systems now allow incident details, resource locations, weather data, and historical patterns to be pulled together instantly, helping controllers make faster, better-informed decisions. Systems such as Sea-Flux are part of this shift, bringing together operational data streams so teams can track assets, monitor conditions, and manage resources with far greater precision than paper logs or disconnected systems ever allowed.
Building skill without the risk
Preparing crews for the unpredictable nature of sea rescue used to mean relying almost entirely on real-world experience and drills. Modern training simulators now let personnel rehearse high-pressure scenarios - capsizes, night searches, mass casualty events - in a controlled environment first. This builds muscle memory and decision-making skill before crews ever face the real thing, improving safety for both rescuers and those they're trying to save.
A watchful eye - day and night
Perhaps the most significant shift of all is the growing role of artificial intelligence in maritime monitoring. AI systems can now process vast amounts of radar, satellite, and camera data continuously, flagging unusual vessel behaviour, potential distress signals, or environmental hazards long before a human observer might notice. This doesn't replace the judgement of experienced controllers and crews, but it does free up human attention for the situations that need it most.
As one Coastguard Skipper in Auckland put it: "The future is incredibly exciting with AI starting to show us how it can contribute to saving lives at sea, faster. But that future isn't years away, it's next month, and sometimes next week."

None of this technology changes the fundamental nature of Coastguard work - it still comes down to trained people making difficult decisions in dangerous conditions. But jet skis, drones, satellite links, smart data systems, and AI are giving those people better tools, better information, and more time. In an environment where minutes matter, that combination of human skill and technological innovation is quite literally saving lives.
It's a pace of change that's being felt right across the marine world, not just within Coastguard itself.
