Nestled between the sea and sand dunes, Mangawhai is a favourite destination for boaties, surfers, and holidaymakers. With more people enjoying these waters, there’s a growing need for a dedicated local Coastguard presence.

Coastguard New Zealand and the local community is supporting the trial of the Mangawhai unit. In May, the unit took on their first volunteers. They have a dedicated rescue vessel, tow vehicle, and a site to store these. The volunteer crew have been busy with training and have a goal to be able to support the local community over the summer period when things don't go to plan on the water. 

The unit's trial period is until April 2026 when Coastguard New Zealand will conduct an assessment with a view to making the unit a permanent fixture in the community.
