Bluff

Vessel Information

In 2001 a benefactor in Auckland donated a 12.5 metre Rayglass protector vessel which was renamed NZAS Rescue in acknowledgement of the generous sponsorship of NZ Aluminium Smelters based at Tiwai Point.

In November 2009 this was then replaced with a 8.5 metre Naiad with assistance from Coastguard New Zealand. A temporary measure while we secured funds for a new ‘fit for purpose’ rescue vessel to suit the conditions in Foveaux Strait.

Thanks to the generosity of the Southland community Coastguard Bluff built a new custom designed 13m rescue vessel that came into service in 2015. Bluff Rescue has been the Unit's reliable, rescue-ready vessel ever since, enabling the Unit to continue their lifesaving work in the community.
