In early 2012, the communities in and around Houhora were approached to gauge the support of starting up a Coastguard Unit. The response to forming a Unit was keenly received and supported.
Coastguard Houhora Inc became affiliated with Coastguard New Zealand in October 2012. Initially using volunteers’ vessels of opportunity, we began providing a consistent rescue service to our community.
In July 2015 we were given the use of a 5.5m Naiad – named 'Houhora Rescue' – to assist us with the required training. Later in 2015 we gained Operational Status thanks to the dedication of our volunteers to train when required.
Currently on the lookout for a larger vessel.
We now have our own dedicated premises, thanks to all the hard work and hours given by volunteers and supporters.
We provide marine search and rescue services from Cape Reinga to Knuckle Point – (entrance to Doubtless Bay.) This level of service requires a high level of training and commitment from our volunteers who are all locals. We are always on the lookout for new volunteers.
Meet Us - we meet regularly at Pukenui School and also occasionally use the Houhora Game Fishing Club as a venue for events.
