In 1976 Coastguard Rotorua Lakes was established by members of the Rotorua community concerned with the lack of available marine safety. As the primary maritime search and rescue service, Coastguard Rotorua Lakes is here to make Rotorua waterways a safer place for boaties.
All Coastguard crew members on board our rescue vessels are passionate volunteers. They’re also highly trained professional volunteers, so you can be safe in the knowledge that when you call Coastguard for help, you’ll be in expert hands.
Coastguard Rotorua Lakes Crew respond on average to between 40 - 50 callouts per year. They vary from simple breakdown tows, to more serious incidents like missing boaties or boats running aground or medical emergencies.
We are the emergency services first response for all of Rotorua’s local waterways and lakes, as well as parts of the Waikato rivers.
