Gisborne Volunteer Coastguard was formed in 1986. It evolved from Gisborne Jet Rescue Boat which had been operated by the Fire Service prior to that time. Since that time Coastguard Gisborne has operated a number of rescue vessels.
The current rescue vessel “Gisborne Lion Foundation Rescue” was commissioned into service in August 2009 with the generous support of The Lion Foundation and other supporters.
