Our unit started in March 2008 with a lot of work by Jay Berriman and others to gather community support and sponsorship from Queenstown Airport.  Previously there had been an ad hoc system of calling around for an available local boat.  Police and the Harbormaster wanted a professionally trained crew and a dedicated rescue vessel.

Coastguard New Zealand have loaned us a 8.5m Naiad jet boat since 2008, and in 2018 we were able to buy this for the book value of around $3k. We use the local Scout den in Frankton as a training venue and store our gear in their storage area, which is not very satisfactory. Since 2013 we have been working towards raising the funds to build our own operations base on land leased from the district council.  Unfortunately by the time we had raised enough money the costs had increased and it was necessary to rethink the building design. Our funders have been very generous in holding onto the funding allocation for us while we sorted this out, and we have now been able to begin work on our new operations base in 2018.
