A small group of local boaties who wanted to be able to provide a better safety service for the thousands of New Zealanders who use the Southern Lakes for recreational purposes started the Coastguard Mackenzie Lakes unit in June 2011.

They met with Coastguard Southern Region in May 2010 and started training later that year.

Our 15 volunteer crew have worked hard to achieve their Coastguard Certificate of Competency qualifications to become operational.  We have a 6.8m Naiad rescue boat on loan from Coastguard New Zealand.
