Coastguard Dunedin was started in November 2005 by a group of local boating enthusiasts under the name Harbour Rescue Inc.

In May 2006 we joined Coastguard and changed our name to Coastguard Dunedin. Our first vessel was a 6.8m Naiad called Southern Trust Rescue which was on loan from Coastguard New Zealand.

In 2011 we started fundraising for a new vessel and in 2012 purchased our current 8.5m Protector vessel from Coastguard Waihi Beach which we renamed Dunedin Rescue. Currently we are working with a number of local search and rescue organisations on a shared resource centre in the port area.

Our current major project is to work with our local boating club on a joint building project as we currently operate from the workshop of one of our volunteers and the Portobello fire station hall.
