How to apply

Apply to be a Coastguard volunteer

We always need individuals who believe that helping people is the right thing to do and are willing to make a commitment to being the best they can be for their fellow Kiwis.

In exchange for your time, you’ll be rewarded with a sense of purpose and end up making lifetime friends with the people you serve alongside.

To apply:

1. Read what it means to be a Coastguard volunteer - either a search and rescue volunteer or part of our shore crew.

2. Once you’ve decided that volunteering for Coastguard is right for you, download our Volunteer Application Form (PDF) and return it to us at:

Coastguard New Zealand
PO Box 33559
Takapuna
Auckland 0740

or email your completed form to Coastguard.

3. Once received, your application will be sent to your nearest Coastguard Region or Unit, who will make contact with you after your application has been assessed.

Please note that an applying does not guarantee a volunteering position. In some cases Coastguard units operate volunteer waiting lists (typically in the larger urban areas).  However in many rural areas there is always a need for new volunteers.
